I’m Kathryn Keener, the owner of One Moon Doula and Doula Business Pathways. I worked as a postpartum doula for a few years, and then saw the need to open an agency to help connect doulas and families in my area. I started with a team of 4-5 doulas… which has grown to a network of close to 30 doulas in two counties in Southern California. I’ve served many hundreds of families and contributed to the professional growth and development of a growing network of doulas for close to ten years. I’ve provided 1:1 coaching to doulas as they grappled with how to make this career path work for their particular needs. I’ve also offered workshops and continuing education, and I find that to be one of the most rewarding parts of owning an agency – supporting doulas, and helping them find success, not just with agency clients but with their own private practice as well.

That said, I’ve also seen quite a few doulas over the years who were unable to make it work – and I’ve seen the pitfalls and the reasons why. I want to help you avoid those pitfalls, and stand strong in knowing that this is the work for you, and that you are the doula for your clients!

Before becoming a doula, I was a mediator for 15 years. You’re looking for subject matter expertise such as working with colicky babies, supporting breastfeeding parents, working with multiples, etc.
You’re mainly volunteering as a doula to give back to your community (that’s great, but many of our tips won’t apply)
You’re looking for a marketing course (we’ll touch on some marketing for sure, but our course is more about building a successful career and successful track record, not exclusively focused on marketing techniques)

I’ve already been a doula for a few years but a lot of this looks like it could help me. Does it make sense for me to join?
Absolutely. Things like improving interview skills, setting boundaries, and fine tuning contracts… are things doulas can always benefit from, even many years into their career.
I haven’t trained as a doula, does it make sense for me to join?
I’d say if you are certain that you will be taking your training… then yes! Taking it before you’ve trained, as long as you know you’ll be training to become a doula, is also great!
I’m a newborn care specialist, does it make sense for me to join?
Totally. Our roles are so similar. Contract terms might at times be slightly different but interview skills, setting boundaries, preventing burnout, and scheduling strategies apply to all of us! Plus, many doula agencies hire NCS’s as well, so the bonus content may come in handy too!
